About The Artist

Alexandria Fredrickson is a multi-media artist and art educator born and raised in Vancouver, Washington. Having recently earned an AA degree at Clark College, she is now working toward a degree in Art Education at Western Washington University. Alexandria is extremely passionate in educating future artists and developing her own identity as a professional artist.

Alexandria uses her art as a language to express deeply personal experiences. Themes included in her work frequently surround death and mortality, racial/gender identity, adolescence, and the passage of time. While her style is constantly being developed, she has recently worked with oil paints to explore self portraits and an understanding of human connection.

Every art medium holds its own place in my life, but my true passion lies in ceramics. Being able to create not only a beautiful and functional piece of art, but an object I can insert into my daily life, is deeply satisfying.

Ceramics is a beautiful ritual of creation; taking a material from the earth and working with that is an extraordinary human experience. I also intend to explore my own identity through making works about nostalgia, personal memories, and my experiences as a Black woman in the Pacific Northwest. A large theme I feel also carries throughout my work is one that was pointed out to me: time. When I was 15 I lost my mother, prompting themes of mortality, our passage through life, and how we all can relate to death to be explored through my work. While I think harsh emotions and personal subjects have always been close to my art, time or metaphors surrounding it have seemed to link its way into my pieces in one way or another.

Ultimately, art and the act of creating is an innate part of who I am. Gaining the ability to express this through my art and also through teaching my knowledge of art is my true purpose as an artist at this moment.
